- Sun Safety: The Truth about Sun Protection
Anti-Aging Skin Care
There are so many products and procedures available for aging skin that it is easy to get confused. Just remember that over the counter products cannot do what prescription strength products can do (no matter what the companies claim).
The best thing to do is to protect your skin from the sun by wearing/using sun protective clothing, hats, visors, sunglasses, umbrellas, and sunblock (in the areas that you cannot cover with clothing or hats). Choosing a gentle cleanser and choosing the proper skin care regimen for your skin is important. Let Dr. McCullough help you choose the right prescription strength regimen for your skin.
BOTOX® / Dysport® / Xeomin®
Many people are troubled by the facial wrinkles/lines that form from aging, sun damage, frowning, squinting, and smiling. BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA), Dysport®(abobotulinumtoxinA), and Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) are prescription medicines that are injected into the muscles responsible for the wrinkles/lines. There, they block signals from the nerves to the muscles.
Thus, the injected muscles can no longer contract which allows the wrinkles to relax improving the frown lines, crow’s feet, and/or other treated wrinkles. These medicines can give noticeable results with no surgery and no recovery time. This is why millions of patients have chosen these treatments.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) innovative light technology sets new standards for the treatment of skin conditions associated with aging, rosacea, active life-styles and sun damage. IPL light energy allows treatment of “splotchy skin”. It can help with ruddiness, tiny background broken blood vessels, splotchy brown pigment, and dull lifeless skin. This therapy can be used on the face, neck, chest and arms.
Laser for Brown Spots
Unsightly spots on the skin bother people of all ages. Spots may be a freckles or lentigines (called liver spots or age spots or sun spots). These are flat and vary in size and color (light to dark brown). They usually appear on the areas most exposed to the sun. If these spots are bothersome cosmetically, they can be removed with lasers for very reasonable fees.
DOT Laser Resurfacing
DOT Therapy with the SmartXide. DOT fractional carbon dioxide laser offers the ultimate in skin rejuvenation in just one to two hours for most treatments. DOT Therapy is ideal for the treatment of skin aging, sun damage, brown spots, age spots, freckles, fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity/texture, precancerous changes, and acne scars.
Not only does the DOT offer amazing results, but it does so safely and quickly with less downtime than the traditional carbon dioxide lasers. It can be used not only on the face, but also on the neck and chest and other body areas!
Phenol - Croton Oil Chemical Peel (segmental)
This type of peel was kept secret years ago and was used to keep Hollywood stars beautiful and youthful. This peel is known as “face lift in a bottle.” It is difficult to get rid of DEEP wrinkles and acne scars even with newer lasers. However, this deep peel can be used on difficult areas (around the mouth, around the eyes) to improve severely damaged areas. The rest of the face can be treated with lasers or lighter peels.
Laser for Telangiectasia
Telangiectasia are small visible dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin. They are often referred to as “broken blood vessels” or “spider veins” although they are actually capillaries. They can develop in men and women especially in sun exposed areas (nose, cheeks, side of the neck, chest, and chin).
They can arise as a result of sun damage, pregnancy, rosacea, or merely due to a hereditary tendency. Luckily, they can be treated with a variety of lasers if they are bothersome cosmetically.
Microdermabrasion
Our office uses the Derma Genesis microdermabrasion system, the most powerful and clinically effective system on the market today. Medical microdermabrasion uses medical grade crystals that are vacuumed across the surface of the skin at high speed, using a closed loop system and hand piece. The crystals exfoliate the skin, exposing a softer and smoother layer of skin to replace the exfoliated skin.
The underlying epidermis is also stimulated by abrasion and vacuum. This stimulates new collagen and thickens the dermis improving resistance to the effects of aging. Microdermabrasion works wonders on acne, oily skin, large pores, plugged pores, dull skin, brown spots, and melasma (facial pigment). Our regular Obagi customers, regular acne patients, pregnant women, and brides-to-be receive discounts on microdermabrasion treatments!
Sclerotherapy
Spider veins, known medically as telangiectasia, are dilated skin capillaries. While they may be red (arterial capillaries) or blue (venous capillaries), most people have both types. The microinjection technique (sclerotherapy) is still considered the treatment of choice for leg spider veins.
It consists of instilling a solution (hypertonic saline) into these tiny capillaries using an extremely tiny needle. The needle barely pricks the skin, and the solution irritates the capillaries causing them to collapse and fade away. The blood is rerouted through healthier veins. Multiple treatment sessions are usually needed, and results are slow. However, patients are usually thrilled with the results!
